Luxury, Romantic and Boutique Accommodation in Albany
See the south coast with day trips out of Albany
Albany marks the spot where European settlers first set foot in Western Australia and the city still carries traces of their influence and legacy. 50 colonial-era buildings have been transformed into museums, galleries and restaurants. To see it all – convict prisons, whaling ships, cottages and National Trust residences – the 30-minute self-guided Amity Trail is your best bet. ANZAC history-enthusiasts can also go to King George Sound, the site where the first ANZAC convoy departed for the First World War.
Peruse the stalls at the weekend Albany Farmers’ Markets, or slap on some SPF and kick off your shoes to wander the city’s famed beaches – Little Beach at Two People’s Bay, Middleton Beach, and Ellen Cove. Gull Rock National Park has secluded stretches perfect for swimming, plus excellent fishing spots. Explore the granite rock formations or snorkel at William Bay National Park. Time your visit to coincide with whale-watching season (June to October) and book a charter tour to catch a glimpse of southern right and humpback whales. Plus you might also spy dolphins or seals near Bald Head.
If you like your parks leafy rather than sandy, Albany has you covered. There are national parks and reserves in every direction around Albany. Stirling Range National Park features a major mountain range – snow falls here occasionally – and is home to unique and brightly-coloured wildflowers. Over at Walpole-Nornalup National Park is The Valley of the Giants – Tree Top Walk. Those with a fear of heights might sit this one out, as the walkway sits 40 metres above ground among the tree canopy.
There are plenty of ways to see the delights of Albany and one of the best is using your accommodation as the ultimate base. From family-operated B&Bs and apartments with ocean-view balconies to holiday homes and swanky guesthouses, Albany’s accommodation options cover all budgets, locations and styles.
