Experience Esperance's white-sand beaches and relaxed accommodation

Esperance, on the south coast of Western Australia, is where the outback says hello to the Southern Ocean. It makes for a spectacular contrast and to beach-lovers, it’s almost like location catnip. Here, you’ll find Australia’s whitest beach, Lucky Bay. Located in Cape Le Grand National Park and discovered by Matthew Flinders, Lucky Bay was made popular by its toothpaste commercial-white sand and made famous by the kangaroos that laze upon it. Naturally, visitors flock to the beach to experience the bleach-blonde sand for themselves – and to take envy-inducing snaps for friends and family back home.

While Cape Le Grand might be the headliner of the region, there are other parks in Esperance’s stable too, including Fitzgerald River, Cape Arid and Woody Island. Discover the park of your choosing by meandering the networks of coastal walks; rust-hued granite outcrops, picnic spots and wildflower-sprouting bushland are some of the sights you can expect along the way.

Cast your gaze past the ocean break and you’ll see Recherche Archipelago. The islands are largely untouched and can be seen aboard a cruise that departs from the mainland. On the journey over, keep your eyes open for dolphins, whales (during season), fur seals, seal lions and soaring sea eagles. Middle Island is the archipelago’s largest island and is home to Lake Hillier, a pink-hued lake that, from above, looks like a giant strip of bubblegum.

Most of Esperance’s draws are of the coastal persuasion, but there are pursuits to be had away from the water too. Wander Esperance’s own Stone Henge, window-shop through the collection of galleries, gawk at the imposing curves of Wave Rock or explore a section of the Great Ocean Drive. The good news? You can see all Esperance boasts thanks to a collection of well-positioned accommodation throughout the area. There are self-contained pads and secluded B&Bs, as well as station and farm stays for travellers seeking something left of centre.
