Off grid glamping on a world-famous reef

Property reviewed by Stephanie Mikkelsen

No WiFi. No TVs. No tablets or computers. Diehard tech junkies may quake at the thought of leaving their smart devices on sleep mode or at home, but that is exactly how Sal Salis Ningalgoo Reef is intended to be experienced – signed out and signed off.

One of the original glamping getaways in Australia, Sal Salis is special. Part of its magic is its exclusivity. After all, this is not a stay you can just duck to on a moments notice; an escape here, and it is an escape in every sense of the word, must be planned and anticipated. A string of low-lying coastal-safari tents are burrowed into the sand of a pristine beach in Cape Range National Park on North West Cape. There are only 16 tents, including one Honeymoon Tent, at the camp. So how close are the tents to the turquoise water of Ningaloo Reef? A few barefoot steps at the most, so forget putting on your flip-flops or sand shoes.

This is laidback luxury at its very best. Your tent has been designed to blend into the surrounding scrub and comes with all manner of comforts: handmade jarrah bed frames with pillowy mattresses, eco-friendly ensuite bathrooms and, perhaps most importantly, private decks that look out across the pristine landscape. From a perch reclined on your king bed or the deck, keep an eye out for grazing kangaroos or even breaching whales.

Sal Salis’ central lodge is where you’ll mingle with other guests, tuck into continental breakfasts and feast on the sumptuous chef-prepared dinners. Break out the pieces from one of the stocked board games and suggest a tournament, or fetch a cool drink from the self-serve bar and lose an hour or two immersed in a good book. As the sun begins to set, cast your gaze upwards to watch the stars emerge; Sal Salis’ setting is a fantastic place to see the Milky Way.

It is easy to do a lot of nothing while at Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef, but it would be an opportunity missed to not experience Mother Nature’s splendour when you are here. Wade into the crystal-clear waters, snorkel in hand, to catch a glimpse of this incredible underwater world, or head out on an expedition to swim with one of the reefs most famous inhabitants – the whale shark. The camp’s rates include guided wilderness activities such as sea-kayaking, walks and snorkelling, however whale swims and scenic flights do cost extra.
