Clear waters, darting fish and world-famous reefs wait in Exmouth

Snorkels at the ready? You’ll need one in Exmouth. That’s because Exmouth on the Coral Coast is the springpad for one of the most famous reefs in the world – you don’t even need to book a charter trip to discover it. No, simply paddle a few metres out from Exmouth’s shore and you’ll find yourself cruising with darting fish and graceful sea turtles through the crystal-clear waters of Ningaloo Reef.

This World Heritage-listed reef is Exmouth’s bread and butter, and the chance to discover the reef is what brings most visitors to this small resort town. An eye-boggingly beautiful collection of marine life call Ningaloo Reef home but the most sought after is the migrating whale shark. These gentle giants visit between April and July, and shark-spotting expeditions – swimming and glass-bottomed boat tours – operate daily during season. TO find whalesharks for these excursions, spotter planes scour the reef from above in search of these elusive silhouettes. On these trips, chances are you’ll also see humpback whales, dugongs, manta rays and spinner dolphins. All travellers looking to snorkel alongside whalesharks should be confident swimmers.

Off the water, Cape Range National Park offers a rugged contrast to the azure blues of Ningaloo. Hike trails and lookouts criss-cross through the park. Explore secluded bays, deep gorges and keep your eyes peeled for land-loving wildlife – emus, red kangaroos and rare rock wallabies. Highlights within the park include Mangrove Bay, a bird sanctuary overlooking a lagoon, Mandu Mandu Gorge, with its three-kilometre walking trail, and Charles Knife Canyon and its smattering of gorgeous lookout points.
