Wander over from your luxury getaway to see the sunset at Cable Beach
Ask any visitor what is on their itinerary for their time in WA’s North West and, if they’re heading to the Broome area, most will respond that a visit to Cable Beach is high on the agenda. Cable Beach is an intrinsic part of Broome’s identity, and has become a travel destination in its own right.
This 22-kilometre long beach boasts blindingly white sand and picture-perfect breaks, and is named after the telegraph cable that first connected Broome and Java in 1889. At the southern end of the beach is Gantheaume Point, a site where 130-million-year-old dinosaur footprints will thrill all visitors.
As much as these facts might come in handy at a local trivia night, most of Cable Beach’s visitors probably aren’t fussed; that’s not what draws the crowds to Cable Beach. What everyone really comes to see are the spectacular sunsets. Watch the sun sink into the horizon from the saddle of the camel, or bring along a bottle of bubbly and clink your glasses over a picnic dinner. Don't forget to bring your camera!
The most popular section of Cable Beach is towards the end of Cable Beach Road, and is where you’ll find the information bay, car parking and some eateries. To find a stretch to call your own, you’ll have to venture slightly further afield. Having a four-wheel drive is a great way to reach a more deserted area of beach. Simply navigate your vehicle past the rocky section and continue to drive until you arrive at a section that is all yours. Many four-wheel drivers motor along the beach, so follow their tracks if you need.
As a resort town, Broome and Cable Beach have no shortage of luxe accommodation. The offerings differ between resorts, with some offering adults-only stays and others featuring two- or three-bedroom townhouses perfect for travelling groups and families. Of course, if a resort isn’t for you, choose to stay in a self-catering apartment, comfortable hotel or even a wilderness or eco-friendly lodge.
