Super mines, red earth and quirky accommodation in Kalgoorlie

Planes, trains and automobiles: all will take you to Kalgoorlie, the largest city in the Australian outback. Born out of the 1880s gold rush, Kalgoorlie was once awash with bright-eyed prospectors looking to strike it rich. Not much has changed, except that picks and pans have now been replaced with trucks, engineers and fly-in-fly-out miners.

To see Kalgoorlie’s 21st-century mining credentials, join a guided tour of the Super Pit, one of the world’s biggest open cut mines. Once you’ve slipped on a high-visibility vest and safety glasses, you’ll be taken inside Super Pit Mining Operations, gawk at the mammoth machinery, peer into old miner’s shafts and be treated to views across the entire pit.

Storms in the goldfields offer more than a cooling respite from the Kalgoorlie heat. The thunder and lightning bring out resident storm photographers, so make like the locals and point your lenses skyward. Other artistic kicks can be had with a visit to one of Kalgoorlie’s galleries showing everything from drawing and sculpture to photography and painting.

A two-hour drive out of Kalgoorlie is Lake Ballard, location of the world’s largest outdoor gallery and the brainchild of prize-winning artist Antony Gormley. 51 sculptures make up the installation and the works are strewn across the barren landscape. If you can, visit in the late afternoon and hang around until dusk to watch the sun slowly sink into the horizon.

Closer to town, Kalgoorlie’s sunsets are just as spectacular as out at the Lake, and a painter’s palette of vivid red, yellow and orange hues light up the sky. Enjoy your first Kalgoorlie sunset from the balcony of your self-contained apartment, or from the outdoor setting in the backyard at your holiday home. You’ll find some more eclectic stays in Kalgoorlie Boulder too, including an old converted church that will have you giving thanks for journey to this part of the Golden Outback.
