On Our Last Getaway:
There was a chill in the air when we arrived at The Hygge House in Blairgowrie, but this Danish-inspired den on the Mornington Peninsula soon enveloped us with its warm and welcoming style. This is a getaway that makes it easy to settle in, and it wasn’t long before I had cocooned myself in two fluffy blankets and curled up on a linen-clad couch. That is, after I marvelled at the bike (another nod to the Danes) suspended above the stairwell, the size of the walk-in shower in the main bathroom, and the thought that has clearly gone into fitting out the country-style kitchen.
The layout of The Hygge’s House living space is where this stay will really win fans. It has been planned brilliantly, in an open-plan style that is still seemingly divided into separate zones. Behind the aforementioned couch are two comfortable balcony-facing chairs, perfect for reading and relishing afternoon sun – without sequestering yourself away from your group. The corner placement of the dining table, complete with bench seats, is also fantastic. It is easy to imagine families and groups really making the top floor their own, working through board game tournaments and the library of DVDs.
No matter where you are in this space – eating breakfast, washing dishes, or watching TV – there is no escaping the views. Thanks to The Hygge House’s raised perspective, the gaze sweeps across acres of scrubland and Blairgowrie backstreets.
What To Expect
Unfamiliar with the Danish concept of ‘hygge’? It is all about taking pleasure from the small things and the heart-warming feeling of contentment you take from these simple actions. Think scooting further under the covers of a freshly-made bed, or feeling the sun warm your skin as you sit on a balcony with ocean views.
You will be able to do both of the above at The Hygge House in Blairgowrie. This classic beach getaway embodies what hygge is all about. It has the cosiness and charm guaranteed to have you feeling the warm and fuzzies plus it also comes kitted out with all the wares essential for anything coastal break. This two-storey pad has the undertones of Scandi design, with an airy floorplan, neutral colour palette and clean lines.
Start your hygge-laced hideaway stashing your bags in your pick of the three bedrooms (one downstairs, two upstairs). A wood-burning pot belly stove in the living area can be sparked in winter, or push back the sliding doors to connect the upper floor with the generous wraparound balcony. Take a glass of local wine, a favourite mixed drink or a morning coffee out onto the alfresco dining setting for a leisurely sip as you enjoy the ocean views.
For any getaway to make travellers truly feel at home, guests shouldn’t want for anything. And that is why The Hygge House comes equipped with everything you’d expect to find at a friend’s home – let alone a holiday house. WiFi and Foxtel mean you can still watch your favourite TV shows and post to Facebook; a stash of toys and games will keep kids entertained; a modern kitchen has appliances and utensils for self-catering.
The balcony is the star of this house, wrapping almost the entire living space and is the natural setting for a morning tea or evening wine. Even though the horizon was dusted with a slight haze during my time, the views offered by the wrap-around balcony still had me in awe.

Eat, See, Do
McCrae is a 15-minute drive from Blairgowrie and is home to Merchant & Maker, the dining outpost of local bean roaster Commonfolk Coffee. The café has a cosy cottage feel and an excellent breakfast and lunch menu. Naturally, the brews are pretty stellar too. Peninsula Pantry is a bit closer to The Hygge House, in Rye, and is a go-to when you’re in the mood for unfussy and light fare.
Max’s Restaurant at Red Hill Estate is one of the original winery eateries on the Peninsula and boasts divine views from the dining room. The menu changes seasonally and the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. Down the road from Red Hill Estate is another of the Peninsula’s favourites: Montalto Vineyard & Olive Grove. Book a table at the recently revamped restaurant for fine dining and degustation, or take a seat on the piazza for wood-fired pizza. A wander along the estate’s sculpture walk is a lovely post-lunch stroll. Also around the figurative corner from Max’s Restaurant are The Long Table, The Epicurean Red Hill and Red Gum BBQ.
The Mornington Peninsula’s cellar offering extends beyond wine grapes. Try the cider selection at Mock Red Hill while nibbling some of the house-made freeze-dried fruit (the strawberries are especially good), or sip at one of the brews from Red Hill Brewery or St Andrews Beach Brewery.
Six minutes’ drive into Sorrento. 13 minutes’ drive to Peninsula Hot Springs. 15 minutes’ walk to Koonya Beach or Blairgowrie Foreshore. 24 minutes’ drive to Cape Schanck Lighthouse. 90 minutes’ drive from Melbourne.
