On Our Last Getaway...
Even the overcast sky couldn’t dampen our excitement as we pulled into the long winding driveway of Orchard Keepers. The drive snakes past the secluded separate cottage and around to the front of the main house, where Poss was waiting to usher us inside. The house was already toasty with warmth and would become even more so after we lit the fire that, happily, had already been set.
The layout of Orchard Keepers is clever. The two original cottages, now joined by a central passageway, each represent a wing of sorts, complete with a lounge, bathroom and two bedrooms. It makes the house perfect for families – parents in one wing, kids in the other – or adult groups that love travelling together but don’t really want to live on top of one another for a week or so.
One of the most precious jewels in Orchard Keepers’ crown is it is outdoor spaces. Two deck spaces will undoubtedly get a good workout by guests during spring and summer, and the tennis court is sure to see its fair share of Wimbledon-worthy tournaments. We even picked herbs from the kitchen garden – basil, parsley, sage and thyme – to use in our dinner. It was while plucking herbs from the garden bed that it hit me how pleasantly private this patch of Red Hill is; a treat considering some of the area’s top haunts are only just down the road.
What To Expect:
Nestled in the vineyards and orchards of the Mornington Peninsula lies Orchard Keepers; three 19th century cottages beautifully transformed into one luxurious, provincial-style home.
With four bedrooms in the main house and more space to explore in the original Workers Cottage, this is the ultimate destination for an elegant country escape. Feel the stress melt away as you roam the endless expanse of lush gardens and perhaps even wrap your arms around the Sequoia tree as you embrace the therapeutic effects of nature.
Delight in helping yourself to fresh vegetables and herbs from the two large kitchen gardens – you’ll love creating meals with these ingredients. Foodies can also enjoy a variety of seasonal produce such as berries, citrus and stone fruits. After a delicious dinner and an evening spent relaxing, enjoy the sublime Hale Mercantile Co. linen; it will make you feel like royalty. So too the collection of treasured pieces decorating the cottages that have been sourced from all corners of the globe.
The French theme continues with linen sofas, vintage furniture and double French doors, which open to exquisite surrounding vistas, adding to the tranquillity of this hidden gem. Although you will find it difficult to tear yourself away from your new digs, Red Hill Market, Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm, Point Leo Beach and an array of wineries are just a stone’s throw away should you need a change of scenery.
Whether you stay for a night or a week, the satisfaction and wonderment experienced at Orchard Keepers will be with you for years to come.
This is sophisticated country living at its most stylish and Orchard Keepers' polish is something usually seen on Pinterest boards. It is clean and bright, with light bouncing off blonde timber flooring and pale linens. I particularly loved the kitchen set-up and, while it was too chilly to sit outside on my visit, I know that taking up residence on one of the al fresco deck settings would be a favourite past-time on warm days.

Paringa Estate is one of Orchard Keepers’ most esteemed neighbours and a visit to the cellar door or fine dining restaurant – or perhaps both – rewards with outstanding views plus dishes such as kingfish with Jerusalem artichoke or saffron tagliatelle and porcini cream. Prancing Horse Estate and its intimate cellar door is also down the road. Follow Point Leo Road towards Red Hill South, stopping off at Red Hill Cellar & Pantry to pick up supplies for your stay – fresh fruit and vegetables, local larder staples and other treats to tempt your tastebuds. Takeaway coffee and some eat-in options are available, or walk up to Red Hill Baker for one of the duck and five-spice pies. Turn right along Shoreham Road towards The Long Table, a refined French restaurant, and The Epicurean Red Hill, a one-stop shop for café breakfasts, wood-fired pizzas and picks from the Italian-inspired menu. Match local eats with regional sips by exploring the number of cellar doors sprinkled throughout the surrounding Red Hill and Merricks region such as Red Hill Estate, Foxey’s Hangout, Merricks Estate and Montalto Vineyard & Olive Grove.
