Luxury, Romantic and Boutique Accommodation in the Gippsland Lakes

A trio of lakes lures water-lovers and anglers in Victoria’s East.

A getaway to the Lakes is the perfect excuse to dust off your life-jacket and hit the water

Named for the network of waterways that sit snugly within its boundaries, the Lakes is also called East Gippsland. This is a destination for water-babies and nature-lovers. There are marshes and lagoons to gawk at; lake-toting islands waiting to be explored, and even a 90-mile stretch of pristine beach to wander.

Hitting up the Lakes is the natural next destination once you’ve ticked off discovering southern Gippsland and Wilsons Promontory. Begin in Bairnsdale, the gateway to the area. This pretty launching pad can be used to see Lake Wellington, Raymond Island and the neighbouring forests. Pencil in a pitstop at the Mitchell River silt jetties, the longest of its kind in the world.

Head east onto Metung, a sleepy town that sits at the end of the Great Alpine Road. A relaxed village feel, excellent fishing spots and boating opportunities make Metung a popular choice for summer getaways by the water. Lakes Entrance is further east still, and sees an influx of visitors during the warmer months. It sits on the edge of Ninety Mile Beach, and is home to a collection of boutique accommodation options, tours, waterfront cafes and safe-swimming breaks. Make your way up to Kalimna Lookout for beautiful coastal views, and definitely have at least one dinner of fresh-battered fresh and chips while you are here.

Towards the easternmost-point of the Gippsland Lakes is Mallacoota. The nearby Croajingolong National Park boasts 100 kilometres of white sandy beaches, as well as coastal headlands, walking tracks and picnic spots. Keen travellers can make the leap between Victoria to New South Wales from Mallacoota.

While the water is undoubtedly one of the Lakes’ biggest draws, don’t go ignoring the inland delights either. Walks and hikes are a leisurely way to discover the lush landscape, or clamber into a saddle or seat of a four-wheel drive for speedier sight-seeing. However you explore the Lakes, you’ll find the perfect luxury getaway in our collection of boutique stays.
