From the days when fortune-seekers deposited their gold or bonds, this bank has always been the focal point of Beechworth's now-historic precinct. Today the treasure here is one of country Victoria's few five-star retreats.
When owner Heidi Freeman and Jim Didolis added a new wing, the result was something to behold. The new 1930s-inspired suites overlook a beautiful formal garden with solar-heated pool and spa. These suites have the most divine marble bathrooms and handcrafted large windows from floor to ceiling overlooking the landscaped gardens. It would be hard to choose between the Victorian rooms upstairs, which have been exquisitely renovated to replicate Victorian grandeur, or to stay in a room downstairs with an art-deco theme.
Also admirable are the various guest spaces, from the sun room with kitchenette, the formal dining room, the drawing room and the garden, which together ensure plenty of options to relax. The former banking chamber is now a gorgeous reception and function space with chandeliers that hint at the splendor throughout.
The award-winning Freeman on Ford is renowned for its generous multi-course breakfast and the option of afternoon tea on arrival. And for a group function, imagine a cocktail party on the wonderful terrace spilling down to the pool with its glorious reflection as the centerpiece.
