A graceful getaway with a divine neighbour

Property reviewed by Stephanie Mikkelsen

Maggies is a grand dame and is sure to deliver a getaway experience you have never had before. This Federation-era home is heritage listed and neighbours St Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Trentham. Once the home of the local parish priest, Maggies has been converted into a heavenly hideaway by its owners – both of whom happen to be interior and landscape designers.

The style of Maggies is one of this stay’s calling cards. Each of the four bedrooms has a unique theme and personality, from moody monochromes in one lair to framed floral prints and a decorative rocking horse in another. Pieces from the owners’ collection of antiques and treasures are sprinkled throughout the bedrooms, lounges and dining room. It gives the homestead a curated feel that is unlike other stays in the area.

Maggies works as a eclectic setting for group getaways, giving its guests the use of two restful lounges, a distinguished dining room, and a contemporary kitchen that will please cooks keen to flex their culinary muscles using produce picked up from the Saturday morning Trentham market. Those keen to not touch so much as a chopping board could hire a caterer.

When the sun shines, guests can head out to a spot on the wrap-around verandah – perhaps bringing a cup of tea or an afternoon aperitif with them – to revel in the stillness and tranquillity of Trentham’s country locale. Slip on your walking shoes and wander along Trentham’s main street, making note of boutiques, cafes and restaurants you may want to visit later. It is also only a short drive to surrounding towns, including Daylesford, Hepburn Springs and Kyneton.
