A world of divine luxury and flawless restoration

Property reviewed by Stephanie Mikkelsen on Wednesday, March 7, 2018

Kyneton Old Rectory got its start in life as a commission by the Anglican Church in 1850. And although it has been decades since a rector called this stately stone pile home, out-of-towners now can thanks to an impeccable restoration by the Rectory’s current owners.

The Rectory is a fine example of grand country living, and its transformation from clerical abode to boutique dwelling has been done with an exceptional eye.  Each of the three bedrooms has a unique moniker: David Unaipon, a preacher and the face on Australia’s $50 note; Thomas Walker; and Caroline Chisholm. All bedrooms are beautifully appointed and come kitted with Bose sound systems, pure cotton sheets and ensuites clad with marble tiles and English tapware.

A library stocked with books, a casual lounge area with dining facilities, and an inner hall that can be used for formal meals make up The Rectory’s communal living clout. When the weather permits however, it is hard to imagine any guest passing on the chance to dine alfresco; the gardens and grounds is what really elevates this getaway from great to truly remarkable. The Rectory sits on almost half an acre of established gardens and is sectioned into distinct ‘rooms’, partitioned from one another by lush hedging. Experience a different room every day, moving between a perch in the sunken garden, a spot shaded by the boughs of the imposing walnut tree, or a seat beneath the wisteria-strewn verandah.

Kyneton Old Rectory is an exclusive-use house and bedrooms cannot be booked on an individual basis.
