Luxury, Romantic and Boutique Accommodation in Strahan
Uncover stunning waterfronts and convict history on a getaway to Strahan
Strahan is a peaceful harbourside village that embodies Tasmania’s wild west. Like other towns in this part of the Apple Isle, Strahan’s history is rooted in convicts and pioneers. A notorious convict prison, Sarah Island, even sits just off the coast in nearby Macquarie Harbour. Fast forward to the 21st-century and Strahan has become an iconic Tasmanian destination. Old-world buildings line the streets and waterfront, with shops selling local bric-a-brac and eateries dishing up plates of lip-smacking local produce.
Start your Strahan sight-seeing by wandering the Esplanade, picking up a morning coffee from one of the cafes, and continue along Esk Street towards the Water Tower Hill Lookout. This point is perfect for learning the lay of the land - and is a photo opportunity to boot. Back in the heart of Strahan, say goodbye to dry land and hop aboard a cruise of the Gordon River. These cruises allow visitors to get up close to Tasmania's famous fish farms and offer another perspective of this beautiful town.
Away from Strahan’s centre, there is a treasure-trove of delights to discover. The town is the gateway to Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, home to wild landscapes, deep-running rivers, mountain peaks and jaw-dropping gorges. Hogarth Falls is within walking distance of Strahan (it is a one-hour round-trip at a slow pace) and the track leaves from Peoples Park. There have been sightings of the elusive platypus at the Falls, so keep your eyes peeled for sudden splashes and any duck bills quickly disappearing out of sight.
Strahan is also a departure point for the West Coast Wilderness Railway. This steam railway journey takes travellers to Queenstown along a track that winds through cool temperate rainforest. Prefer sand to soaring trees? Ocean Beach is a few minutes’ drive away and, at more than 30 kilometres, is Tasmania’s longest beach.
A weekend (or longer) spent in Strahan is one you won't forget in a hurry, especially when you stay in one of the luxury getaways from our collection. We also have a range of North West Coast and Tasmania accommodation.
