This former apple-picker’s cottage has been stylishly reimagined by designer Andrew Blaxland as luxurious, cosy and welcoming accommodation perfectly suited for two. Settle in, light a fire (with wood from the surrounding forest) and enjoy an array of local and seasonal produce including Tasmanian cheese and wine.
The charming open-plan living area, filled with eclectic furniture, Tasmanian art works from the owners’ collection and carefully chosen books, make staying in a joy. Be sure to pop on the electric blanket before snuggling into your luxurious bed. In summer, throw open the French doors and enjoy a regional cider while gazing out at Cygnet Bay – you may even spot a wedge-tailed eagle, peregrine falcon, parrot or cockatoo.
If you like exploring, the cottage is conveniently located within 20 minutes of most local activities. Indulge in a long lunch beside the river at Peppermint Bay, learn to cook at Mathew Evans’ (The Gourmet Farmer, SBS) cooking school at Fat Pig Farm (you can even learn how to make sausages!) or visit Grandvewe Sheeps’ Cheesery, who also make vodka, at Birches Bay.
If you prefer more low-key amusements closer to home, head through the farm to the dam (quite a decent walk) where you might glimpse the resident platypus at dusk or dawn. There’s total privacy apart from nocturnal visitors which can include pademelons, quolls, wallabies, potoroos, possums, and even Tasmanian devils. Otherwise, while away the afternoon on the north-facing deck or choose herbs from the garden to whip up dinner using the fully equipped cook’s kitchen with a well-stocked dry pantry. Finish off the day with a long hot shower, which is certainly big enough for two.
