This exclusive island retreat neighbours a pristine Tasmanian landscape

Property reviewed by Stephanie Mikkelsen on Thursday, April 26, 2018

A getaway with a waterfront location and a pristine beach for a neighbour is good, but a one-of-a-kind island lodge that boasts a world-famous national park as its backdrop is even better. Picnic Island is the latter. This is no ordinary island escape. Where tropical stays have coconuts and palm trees, Picnic Island has trips to a penguin colony, uninterrupted outlooks to Freycinet National Park and absolute exclusive-use for its guests.

The copper-clad lodge, designed by local architect John Latham, clings to a rocky shoreline and is spread out across five king bedrooms and one ‘Birdhouse’, a communal guest living space with a lounge, kitchen and fireplace. The Birdhouse comes stocked with classic board games and enthralling reads, though these may only be touched when you are not outside. After all, when this luxury lodge flaunts such an idyllic backyard it seems a missed opportunity to not spend most of your time outdoors.

No matter what your outdoor pursuit of choice, all guests to Picnic Island should make a note to bring walking shoes and sensible kit for exploring. Keen anglers can cast a line from the jetty, trying their luck at tempting flathead and squid. Scour the rocks for mussels, or shimmy into a wetsuit and dive for sea urchins, crayfish and even abalone. Put in for an overnight trip with the island's resident penguin colony, or journey to the mainland for hikes and day trips. Or, simply tuck a good book in the crook of your arm, settle into one of the wooden deck chairs overlooking the water and keep an eye out for dolphins and seals passing by.

Please note that Picnic Island is accessible only by boat. Transfers are operated by Freycinet Adventures and this costs is covered by Picnic Island. Guests however must arrange their preferred transfer time.
