Tasmanian wilderness escape by Lake Leake

Property reviewed by Sophie Davies on Thursday, April 13, 2017

Imagine kicking back on your cabin deck, gazing out over the otherworldly beauty of a pristine, forest-fringed Tasmanian lake, tall trees reflected in the water. Perhaps you’re planning tomorrow’s walk or fishing trip, or just toasting the sunset with a local wine.

Set on an exclusive 2,000-acre estate with three private lakes, Currawong Lakes occupies a serene slice of the East Coast Highlands’ State Forest. A former trout fishery, it has been transformed into the island’s premier fly fishing retreat/game reserve, offering peace, luxury, wilderness activities and sporting pleasures.

Guest numbers are limited to ensure tranquillity, with three tiers of modern-rustic self-contained cabins nestled amid native woodland, offering spectacular lakeside views. Choose between the two-bedroom Bush Cabins (with options from queen beds to bunks), four-bedroom Hunter’s Cabin, or glam three-bedroom Owner’s Lodge, which boasts two bathrooms, a study and wood-fired pizza oven. Each has a full kitchen with dining and lounging areas, and a cosy wood fire. Outdoor decks include an al fresco eating area and a barbecue, perfect for soaking up expansive, all-natural views. You’re also welcome dine at The BBQ Lodge, a shore side restaurant with barbecues and wood fires for chilly nights. Children aged 12 and under stay gratis.

Watch trout, water birds and deer as they roam around the three lakes. If you’re feeling active, go mountain biking or fly fishing. You can also try your hand at a world-class array of clay target ranges to suit all levels, plus simulated grouse and quail shoots.
