We can’t think of any better way to unplug than to board a plane to a remote atoll, which is the only way to access the wild and beautiful Flinders Island. This is one of the few places on earth where you can enjoy empty stretches of white sand, crystal clear bays perfect for swimming or snorkelling, and skies with no pollution or city lights to obscure the stars. Email? Forget about it – you won’t get it here.
In a quiet corner of this islet you’ll find West End Beach House – an oceanfront, architect designed beauty set on 25-acres of coastal reserve, with floor-to-ceiling glass on every side connecting you to nature at all times
On arrival to the West End Beach House, the first thing you’ll notice is their earthy design. Waves of corrugated iron and natural timbers blend seamlessly into the surrounds, and bi-fold glass doors create light-filled, indoor-outdoor spaces. The ‘green’ feel of these hideaways is not just form, but function too. The House has a minimal environmental footprint and so, with that knowledge, you can enjoy your luxurious break 100% guilt free.
In summer, pull back the doors to the House letting the sea breeze flow through, and in winter, enjoy the gorgeous scenery while relaxing snug in front of the fire. The unbroken water views here are beyond beautiful, allowing you to watch the sun sink right into the Bass Strait. Because you’ll be so enticed by the surrounds, the bedrooms and all of the living areas open to a deck or a terrace. Bake fresh fish outside in the wood fire oven, and while it crackles on the coals, sit back with a glass of sparkling and watch the sun fall into the sea.
Not only does West End Beach House indulge you with natural wonderments, every creature comfort is provided too. Sumptuous beds are dressed in quality linen, there’s a selection of differently sized and weighted pillows to choose from, cotton nets are draped around the beds in summer and extra blankets are available for winter. A huge, roman style sunken stone tub centres the ‘bathhouse’, and there’s a shower in the private courtyard garden – both allow you to take in beach views while you bathe. The farmhouse style kitchen is equipped with everything needed to prepare delicious Tassie produce – you’ll be plating up fresh oysters, creamy cheeses and local berries and olives to accompany your sundowners.
It’s more than likely you’ll want to stay close to the house, spotting dolphins and seals from the pristine shores, crawling over granite boulders to find your favourite coves, and losing count of shooting stars on moonlit walks. But if you do feel like exploring further afield, Flinders Island has plenty to discover. You can wind up Mt Strzelecki to be rewarded by gob-smacking views, or get on bike or foot for the National Park trails below; cast your line into great fishing spots, or paddle out for a surf or kayak; check out shipwrecks, wetlands, wildlife and more.
