Boutique beauty in the heart of Hobart

On Our Last Getaway...

The first thing that struck me was the soaring windows that overlook leafy green trees, it’s like being in a treehouse, which brings a welcome sense of tranquillity as soon as you step inside.  I also love that you can open the windows too for some fresh Tasmanian air. Everything is at your fingertips in the loft, a fully equipped kitchen, well-stocked minibar so you can bunker down and enjoy the quiet or step outside and you’re in the heart of Salamanca, with whiskey bars and restaurants to indulge.  The café downstairs does a delicious breakfast with the best bacon I’ve had in ages.  It’s hard to find an oasis in the city, but the clever, modern design of Salamanca Wharf Hotel has created one, with a true Tasmanian spirit.

Tip: Don’t miss the little tubs of ice cream in the mini bar freezer, locally made and utterly delicious!

What to Expect:

The Salamanca Wharf Hotel is a striking building nestled between two historic sandstone warehouses on Hobart’s famous Castray Esplanade. Completed in 2012, this boutique hotel provides luxurious, modern apartments ideally located in the heart of the city. Each room is decorated with custom local timber and inspiring Antarctic photography. Picture yourself with feet up in an Eames chair while sampling premium Tasmanian wines and cheeses from the locally curated minibar.

Salamanca Wharf Hotel prides itself on attention to detail, and they’ve covered all bases when it comes to room facilities. We particularly appreciated having a kitchen to prep our own breakfast before heading out each day. If you must get some work done on your break, free Wi-Fi and thoughtful lighting design make the job easier. Other features that really separate this place from a traditional hotel are the polished timber floors, deluxe showers and sublime bedding.

This hotel is perfectly positioned to experience all the attractions of Hobart. The front faces one of Australia’s most famous waterfront precincts, and directly behind is the historic Salamanca Place. On Saturdays, this beautiful strip lined with grand old Georgian buildings becomes a bustling market with Taswegians selling crafts, fresh produce, flowers and vintage treasures. Even if you’ve no interest in shopping, the vibrant atmosphere makes this a wonderful experience. Salamanca’s pubs and cafes do a roaring trade on Saturdays and this is a great spot to rub shoulders with the locals enjoying the weekend.

A little further from the hotel is MONA, the state’s premier art institution. Opened in 2011, MONA has had a transformative effect on Tasmania. For culture lovers this gallery is essential viewing, but there’s a lot more to MONA than just art. There’s a brewery that offers tours and an impressive bar, and a vineyard with tastings at the cellar door. There’s even a restaurant where you can arrive by seaplane, flying from the Hobart waterfront and landing on the River Derwent. Ferries depart regularly from the dock just a few hundred meters from the hotel.

As amazing as Hobart is, a trip to Tassie isn’t complete without experiencing its natural beauty. Bushwalking trails abound on land or you can venture out to sea on an eco-cruise and explore the stunning coastline. Bruny Island is a great daytrip; home to fur seals, fairy penguins and friendly locals.

Hobart is an unforgettable destination, and the Salamanca Wharf Hotel is a comfortable place to rest your head following busy days of exploring.

Owners say:

‘Must dos’ while staying at the Salamanca Wharf Hotel are MONA, the Saturday Market, travelling to the top of Mount Wellington for an incredible view and taking a Pennicott Adventure Cruise to either Bruny Island or the Tasman Peninsula.

Editor's Picks:

Location, location, location. You couldn't ask for a better spot in the Apple-Isle's capital city. And what better vantage to appreciate it from than the Loft Penthouses' stunning architecturally angular windows?

Eat, See, Do

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to culture and the gourmet when you stay at the Salamanca Wharf Hotel.

Explore the exciting variety of entertainment at Salamanca Place, which is conveniently located right next door. On Saturdays, the Salamanca Market is in full swing, and boasts more than 300 stallholders with gourmet treats, antiques and fresh produce on offer to the backdrop of busking musicians.  Shop at the Spacebar Gallery that represents the talent of local artisans and designers, or visit in the evening to catch a show at the Peacock Theatre.

A 15 minute walk and you’ll find yourself tucking into some fine wine and fare at Franklin, one of Hobart’s premiere bar and restaurants in a converted Ford showroom.

At some point during your stay you may want to climb the nearby Mount Wellington, for a chilly yet memorable view of the city. It’s best done at dawn for a spectacular sunrise, or dusk for a great light show. If you did make the climb early, head over to Pigeon Hole for a hearty breakfast featuring farm-fresh product with a focus on sustainable practices.

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is right around the corner, and for contemporary art fans, the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is a must visit, accessible via ferry or road.
