A Barossa homestead so close to the vines you can touch the grapes

On Our Last Getaway...

Brockenchack Vineyard Bed & Breakfast is a getaway that gives you the warm and fuzzies. Our stay here was more like visiting a friend’s country house; one where you instantly feel at home and find yourself overcome with a reluctance to ever leave.

Upon our arrival we were greeted and shown into the homestead by Brockenchack’s owner Trevor. The enthusiasm Trevor has for the property and his wines is incredible, and shone through most brightly on the vineyard tour the following morning. Driven around by Trevor, who was himself accompanied by Rex the Northern Territory Kelpie, we were toured around the entire estate. Trevor pointed out which grapes grew where, which vines were decades old and which had just been planted; he showed us inside the original stone cottage he has converted into a cubby house for his granddaughters, and we were even offered a turn on the family zip line.

When it comes to the homestead itself, it is the small touches that make this getaway great. A loaf of bread, homemade by Trevor’s wife Marilyn, was waiting in the keeper, and the fridge was stocked with local delights. And there isn’t just one type of coffee pod; there are a bowl of pods, in all different blends and strengths. And what to do while waiting for your coffee to pour? Unwrap one of the sweets or toffees found in dishes scattered throughout the home. My pick was the chocolate-filled caramels.

What To Expect:

Deep within South Australia’s arguably most famous wine region, the Barossa, is Brockenchack Vineyard Bed & Breakfast. This is the epitome of a luxurious wine country escape, and the first thing that strikes when arriving at Brockenchack is that the home’s location really does put the ‘vineyard’ in Vineyard Bed & Breakfast.

The homestead is fringed on most sides by verdant vines, and beyond the rows of grape-strewn creepers is the bush landscape of the Eden Valley. Being located on the acreage of a working vineyard, it seems only natural that wine forms a part of the experience with a stay at Brockenchack. Guests are invited to partake in a private wine tasting and vineyard tour during their getaway, and a newly purchased bottle from the Brockenchack Wines range can be just one of the cellar-sourced souvenirs you bring back home with you.

Of course, it is likely that you will want to sample the fruits of your getaway’s location while you are actually in the Barossa, and for this the homestead proffers two excellent settings for doing just that. One said spot is on the wrap-around verandah, where you can toast to your total state of relaxation as you watch the sun sink into the horizon. An alternative perch is from within the bubbling depths of the five-person Jacuzzi. The hot tub sits inside a sheltered spa house, separate from the main homestead and blessed with even more vine views.

In the mornings, before deciding on what cellar doors to visit, what markets to peruse and what drops to sample; tuck into the provisions included in Brockenchack’s breakfast hamper. Early risers will surely be able to rouse their travelling companions from deep slumber by cooking up rashers of local smoked bacon, farm eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes. More continental options – cereals, muesli, fresh fruit – are also supplied.

Editor's Pick

Having dinner with Trevor and Marilyn up at the main house was a true highlight – be sure to ask for Marilyn’s apple crumble recipe – and being privy to a private tasting of Brockenchack’s wines is a treat, no matter if you’re a wine novice or a devoted oenophile.

Eat, See, Do

Murray Street, Tanunda’s main strip, is only a 20-minute drive away from Brockenchack Vineyard Bed & Breakfast. This dining and shopping hub houses the likes of Red Door Espresso, Black Bird Coffee House and 1918 Bistro & Grill. To the Tanunda first-timer, the heritage façade of fermentAsian – also along Murray Street – may look like any old house. But this is actually one of the Barossa’s most exciting eateries, established by cook with no commercial cooking experience and now dishing up acclaimed a la carte and chef’s menus.

Angaston is closer to Brockenchack at 15 minutes’ drive and is where fans of fromage can nibble on tasting plates at The Barossa Valley Cheese Company, dine on modern Australian fare at Vintners Bar & Grill, or tuck into pizzas at Angaston Roaring 40’s. Of course, this is the Barossa and wineries are in ample supply. Stop by Yalumba while you’re in Angaston, and then do the rounds between the cellar doors flanking Nuriootpa, Bethany, Rowland Flat, Stonewell and Seppeltsfield.

When you are in the mood for something other than sipping shiraz, hire a set of two wheels to tackle sections of The Barossa Trail. Or book an early morning flight in a hot air balloon, and mosey between the stalls of the Saturday Barossa Farmers Market.

Location

Less than 20 minutes’ drive to multiple wineries and vineyards. 15 minutes’ drive to Angaston. 17 minutes’ drive to Barossa Sculpture Park. 22 minutes’ drive to Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop. 1 hour 27 minutes’ drive from Adelaide.
