Luxury, Romantic and Boutique Accommodation in Robe
Get wrapped up in Robe's history, beaches and boutique stays
As one of South Australia’s favourite holiday destinations, Robe on the Limestone Coast hums with activity during the warmer months, but this is not just a summertime town. Its mild climate encourages you to be out and about at any time of the year, perhaps fossicking on the windswept beaches.
Robe has been a popular surfing spot since the ‘60s, so you’re also likely to find surfers out catching a wave year-round. You don't have to be a surfer to appreciate Robe's breaks though. The area boasts a handful of quiet and secluded beaches, including the 17-kilometre long Long Beach. These clean southern seas produce a huge bounty of fresh produce. Rock lobster is one of the most sought-after catches, and many restaurants offer this specialty between October and April. Pair your seafood feast with a crisp sauvignon blanc from one of the coastal wineries nearby. Devoted gourmet-chasers might even consider making the trip to Coonawarra, one of the state's premier wine-producing regions and home to award-winning cellar doors and big, bold red wines.
Come down from your seafood splurge by soaking up Robe's fascinating history. It was first sighted by explorer Nicolas Baudin in 1802, settled in the 1840s and blossomed into a bustling port only a decade later. This boom was partly due to the gold rush that gripped Victoria in the 1850s, and the town's popularity hit its stride as thousands of Chinese migrants, looking to avoid the tax that came with landing at a Victorian port, arrived in Robe and proceeded to head to the goldfields on foot. Today, the city centre still has more than 80 historic sandstone buildings and sites. Spend an afternoon wandering the streets and discover the town’s rich past (hint: a brochure available from the Historic Interpretative Centre has a list of recommended sites to visit).
