Get to know South Australia, from to vine-strewn countryside to town-studded coast
It is easy to see why travellers fall in love with South Australia so quickly. Among its charms are world-renowned wine regions, stunning coastlines, idyllic countryside and a booming events calendar. No matter if you’re a newcomer or a seasoned traveller who already has a favourite go-to, there is something in South Australia to beguile everyone.
Adelaide, or the City of Churches, will be on any first-timer visitor’s itinerary. The South Australian capital is compact enough to make the perfect destination for weekend getaways but there are pursuits aplenty – boutique accommodation, heritage sites, award-wining diners – if you have a longer stay in mind. Ditch your car to explore its streets by foot, making sure to hit up the famous markets or walk along the idyllic riverbank.
From Adelaide it is only a one-hour drive to the Barossa Valley, one of Australia’s foodie juggernauts, where days are spent discovering cellar doors and local provedores. Have a gourmet getaway by basing yourself in a Valley township – Tanunda, Nuriootpa, Angaston – and use a car to motor between your next mouthful. To even out the gastronomic indulgence, pick up a bike and cycle from stop to stop. The Valley is mostly flat so biking is easy-going for any cyclist. Tip: it is wise to leave tight belts behind if you’re planning on spending time in the Barossa.
In need of a beach change? South Australia has plenty to satisfy coastline-coveters. The Fleurieu Peninsula is a seaside playground with opportunities for surfing, snorkelling, whale-watching and oceanfront dining. Escape to the Eyre Peninsula for a trip that boasts the best of outback and coastal landscapes. Need more? Try the Limestone Coast or Yorke Peninsula. Or, take things slower by discovering the Riverlands and Murraylands from aboard a hired houseboat. Whoever you choose to nominate as captain is in your hands…
