Find wild surf beaches, boutique accommodation and lush hinterland on the Sunshine Coast and Fraser Coast
Sun, sea, sand and sailing are all catchwords for the impressive Sunshine Coast and Fraser Coast, which cater for water babies and landlubbers alike. Here you can discover rich marine life, stunning coastlines, lush green hinterland and beautiful beaches, where you can walk majestic headlands, swim in deep cool pools, hike along cliff tops and snorkel with the gentle giants of the seas.
Up in the hinterland, pretty towns dot the hills and valleys, and offer an escape from the warm summer sun. Cosy boutique accommodation can be found in the rolling hills behind the Sunshine Coast, while along the coast there are stunning architecturally impressive accommodation options. All this is set within a landscape of extinct volcanic mountains, gentle inland waterways and some of Australia’s most ecologically diverse state forests. Using your Sunshine Coast and Fraser Coast accommodation as a base you can enjoy the area with short day trips to the surrounding attractions.
Naturally, sunshine and beaches go together and there is an incredible choice here, stretching from laid-back Caloundra in the south to the lush forests and sand dunes of the Great Sandy National Park in the north. At the top end of the Cooloola Great Sandy National Park, Rainbow Beach draws its name from the intriguing mineral sands. Nearby the Carlo Sand Blow, which has been created by wind and erosion, is a favourite hang out for paragliders and photographers.
From here, Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world, is only a short 10-minute barge trip away. Perfect for day trips and overnight camping, the island is so immense that you’ll be hard pressed to choose what to do first. Perhaps you might choose to visit the pure white sands of Lake McKenzie, then swim in the champagne pools on the coast or perhaps you’ll head inland to surf down the huge yellow sand dunes in the middle of Fraser Island. The choice is up to you.
