Explore the mix of urban lifestyle and natural beach bliss, with a stay in Townsville or Magnetic Island

Located on the north-eastern coast of Queensland, Townsville sits next to the central section of the Great Barrier Reef—translation, pack your snorkel. Above the Sunshine Coast, this town is really more of a city, and hosts quite a large urban population. Visiting Townsville provides travellers a great getaway destination mix of nature alongside shopping, dining and entertainment.

To get a great 360-degree view of the city, traverse giant pink granite formation; Castle Hill. Climb for the view, stay for the popular walking tracks—although if you’re not feeling altogether energetic, there is vehicle access to this breathtaking lookout hot spot.

Immerse yourself in the city streets with historical buildings such as the Stock Exchange Arcade, harkening back to the 1800s gold-rush era, or the more contemporary Canon Park and Central Village for some good ol’ fashioned shopping and movie watching.

Peruse the wares on Sundays at Cotters Markets, from fresh fruit and veg, to jewellery, craft, art and cakes. Later in the day mosey along to enjoy a bite to eat at the dining precinct of City Lane Townsville. Inspired by New York, this street-art space is filled with trendy bars and a variety of eateries.

Visit Townsville for a solo beach escape, or take the whole family on a discovery of wildlife and adventure. On your next getaway to this sunny spot in north Queensland, wander down The Strand Esplanade, stroll down the pier, make a splash at the water park, and learn a bit about marine sustainability at the Reef HQ Aquarium’s sea turtle hospital.

If you’d like to see the ocean’s inhabitants on a more personal level, pop on the flippers, and hop on (off dive off) a boat to zip over to Magnetic Island. This stunning atoll boasts vibrant coral reefs, and when you come up for air; a national park teeming with Australian wildlife.
