In a world where the word ‘eco’ is overused, Aquila Eco Lodges encapsulate everything that an eco getaway should be. Its secluded position at the foot of Mt Abrupt in the southern Grampians National Park gives guests a real bushland experience. Its 100 acres of land is covenanted Trust for Nature so the native wildlife and birdlife is prolific. In fact, owners Harry and Iwona are registered wildlife carers, and kangaroos, wallabies, emus and echidnas are often seen.
Even if we did not mention ‘eco’, these architect-designed showpieces are eye-catchingly gorgeous yet have earned their sustainable label. The three-storey Tree Houses feature a bedroom on the top floor giving a feeling of sleeping in the trees. The Loft Houses are just as dramatic, with soaring rooflines and a loft bedroom for dreamy star gazing. Whichever you choose, expect cosy wood fires, evaporative cooling, contemporary furnishings and walls of glass (we love the Tree Houses’ glass-walled showers).
An added bonus is Harry’s homebaked bread. A scrumptious loaf is delivered to your lodge fresh every morning. If you are still peckish, the optional full breakfast basket is one of the most lavish we have seen. And don’t forget the Royal Mail Hotel is nearby – Aquila provides a transfer service so you can safely enjoy this world-renowned gastronomic experience.
