When the Barossa's early German-heritage winemakers sought guidance or even divine intervention in tough times, it was to the Zum Kripplein Christi Lutheran Church they would turn. In those early 1860s, as they battled the harsh Australian climate, spiritual guidance was the lynchpin to tame a valley that today has evolved to be one of the new world's leading wine regions.
And this grand dame has herself evolved. The Kirche @ Charles Melton is now an uber-luxurious vineyard escape, a rebirth made possible by a winemaking family with a pedigree of respect for history. Charles Melton is renowned for championing heritage vineyards and their restoration of The Kirche fits superbly with this ethos.
Divine worship today begins in the grand lounge and dining room, where leather lounges have replaced the pews and a warming fire will lend a glow over your special occasion feast. There are two bedrooms (one in the heavenly attic) and a superb bathroom with soaking tub and vineyard views. The vestry is now a gourmet kitchen that would impress a master chef.
Of course, a stroll to the cellar door is a must and a vineyard lunch on the verandah is a wonderful way to sample estate wines in relaxed style.
