The outback meets the tropics in Katherine and Surrounds

Three hours’ drive south-east of Darwin you’ll find the town of Katherine. Set on the banks of the Katherine River, it’s commonly described as 'where the outback meets the tropics', with a dramatic backdrop of gorges, waterfalls, thermal springs and sacred Aboriginal sites. This rugged landscape makes an ideal setting for a range of adventure activities including bushwalking, four-wheel driving, fishing and kayaking.

One of our favourite places in the Northern Territory is the Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park. There are 13 gorges separated by rocks and boulders and you can explore this area of great spiritual and natural beauty by canoe, guided boating tour or air. There are hot springs (32 degrees Celsius year-round) and the spectacular Jurassic Cycad Gardens offer panoramic views of the Katherine River Valley. Join one of the many available tours to find out more about the culture and history of the traditional owners, the Jawoyn people.

Book-buffs should pencil in a visit to Mataranka, the small town made famous in Jeannie Gunn’s We of the Never Never. Dip your toes in the celebrated sandy-bottomed thermal pool, or discover the Mataranka’s pastoral history with a wander through the town’s streets. The Never Never Museum is a go-to for learning about the region’s Aboriginal history, plus there are displays chronicling the Australian Railway and World War II. Nearby, the Elsey Homestead Replica is a peek inside what life living in such an isolated area was like for early settlers.

Swap swimmers for shoes at Judbarra Gregory National Park. This park is the second largest in Northern Territory and features massive gorges, sweeping escarpments and awe-worthy rock formations. It also boasts monsoon rainforest and eucalyptus woodland.
