Get to know Northern Territory

Call it a cliché, but few words could ever do justice to the beauty of the Northern Territory. It is where deep-running gorges and ancient rock art mingle with world-famous landmarks, vibrant cities and landscapes worthy of a second look. It’s also where travellers glamp beneath the starry sky, retreat to luxury outback accommodation and sleep in boutique stays surrounded by national park.

Start in Darwin, Australia’s northern capital that has assumed a legendary status in the national consciousness. This is the city whose spirit could not be quenched by bombings in WWII, or cyclonic destruction in 1974. A special breed of men and women call Darwin home, and they are a bit part of what makes this destination so exciting, cosmopolitan and totally beguiling, Darwin’s night markets are iconic for melding world cuisines, and there are plenty of art galleries, boating excursions, crocodile encounters and other thrills to enjoy. When you crave a respite from Darwin’s year-round balmy climate, hole up in the air-conditioned comfort of your modern apartment or waterfront accommodation.

One of the Territory’s great treasures is its national parks. Litchfield National Park is a must-see on any Territory trip, with monsoon rainforests, waterfalls (including the stunning Florence Falls), streams and magnetic termite mounds. Batchelor, about 100 kilometres south of Darwin, makes a good entry point to Litchfield. The World Heritage-listed Kakadu is Australia’s largest national park and is at its most spectacular between November and April.

Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park is down the track and boasts 13 gorges separated by rocks and boulders. Explore the area by canoe, guided boating tour or by air. Further south is Alice Springs, a lively outback town within arms reach of the McDonnell Ranges. Closer still to the South Australian border is Yulara, the popular gateway to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

For those who take their romantic getaways with a side of adventure, the Northern Territory offers it all.
