Powder-capped peaks and hinterland accommodation in the Snowy Mountains
As the name suggests, the Snowy Mountains do winter really, really well. Once the temperature begins to drop and a chill hits the air, the Snowy Mountains' string of snow resorts spring to life. Think Perisher, Thredbo, Charlotte Pass, Selwyn Snow Resort. Here, these hubs deliver alpine village vibes, access to fresh powder, slopes and ski runs, plus lodges, chalets and cabins for you to rest up in. You can also warm up with steaming mugs of hot chocolate or mulled win. The resorts can become busy during the peak winter periods so make sure to book your Snowy Mountains accommodation early, or to escape the crowds you can base yourself in one of the nearby towns.
And don't write the Snowy Mountains off between September and May, either – this is a year-round destination. So what do when the Snowy Mountains aren't, well, snowy? The region is a haven for outdoorsy types, with bushwalking, hikes, horse riding, climbing, abseiling and caving all available.
Hit Kosciusko National Park, home of Australia’s highest peak and the largest national park in NSW. From Tumut, you can explore the thermal pools and limestone caves at Yarrangobilly, and wine lovers can seek out Tumbarumba to sample cool-climate wines. Dig up a nugget of history at gold rush town Kiandra, or make for Jindabyne for outdoor kicks such as white-water rafting and mountain biking.
Even when ski season grinds to a halt, visitors can take their pick from a range of Snowy Mountains accommodation. There are cosy B&Bs and heritage homesteads for those keen on embracing the Snowy Mountains atmosphere, or shack up in a modern self-contained apartment, swanky hotel or even a townhouse. Having your own set of wheels will make it easy to get around the mountains, and if you're here in winter make sure to fit your tyres with the appropriate kit.
