Have The Best Honeymoon Ever With These 7 Tips

Posted by Stephanie Mikkelsen on Tuesday, October 3, 2017

You’ve officially put a ring on it and now you are honeymoon bound.

No matter where you go, one thing is guaranteed: your ‘moon will be one of the most memorable getaways you ever take. So what to do on your honeymoon? That is, what you do when you’re not preoccupied with activities of an amorous kind.

The good news is that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to having the best honeymoon ever. It should be a celebration of you and your partner as a couple. The fact that it usually doubles as a reward for spending months organising seating charts and table settings is just an added bonus. There are some things you can do that will take your honeymoon to the next level though, and we’re sharing just what those things are. Whether you take one or all seven on board, these tips will have you on track to enjoying some of the best honeymoon ideas.

Dip your toes into something new

Put the ‘new’ in newlywed by trying your hand at something neither you or your partner have done before. It could be something that has been on both of your bucket-lists for a while; something sure to get your adrenalin pumping and heart racing. Pairs of adventurous newlyweds could turn to rock climbing, zip lining or scuba diving. Lovers of more leisurely pursuits could book a stand-up paddle-boarding lesson or a kayaking day trip. Prefer to work your appetite instead of your muscles? Make a reservation at a restaurant where they serve a cuisine you’ve never eaten.

Splash out on something special

Two words: treat yourself. It’s your honeymoon! For you, this might be upgrading to a plush room or suite for a night, booking the chef’s table at a Michelin-starred restaurant, or renting a swanky convertible for a road trip worthy of an old school Hollywood film. It could be something slightly unexpected, such as a guided tour through a rainforest, or a sailing excursion, or you might love the idea of doing something on a smaller scale, including a private cooking class or in-room massages.

Embrace a cliché

How many clichés can you pack into one honeymoon? That’s up to you. But even if the idea of towel-shaped swans and rose petals scattered in heart shapes makes you wince, try to make room for just one cliché on your ‘moon. Clichés are clichés for a reason, after all and some are worth getting over the cheesy-factor for. Go big with hot air balloon rides, romantic dinners at sunset and horse riding along the beach, or get on board with chocolate covered strawberries or a playlist filled with tunes from Barry White and Marvin Gaye.

Match your honeymoon style to your accommodation

This might seem like a no brainer but it is important so definitely worth repeating. Choose your accommodation according to what style of honeymoon you want. Looking for some indulgent R&R? Make for an adults-only getaway on an island paradise. If you want no disruptions, seek out a boutique wilderness retreat or a secluded villa. Those keen on adventure can book a hotel in the heart of a bustling city or a suite at a resort that offers activities aplenty. Luckily, there is no shortage of honeymoon-friendly destinations across Australia, and all come with downright gorgeous accommodation options. Take all of the photos

You may not be able to take home the beaches, or keep your tan for more than a week or two, but one thing you will hold tight are those honeymoon happy-snaps. An album of shots captures that newlywed bliss, plus all of those amazing excursions and day trips you venture out on. Just make sure to remove the more private shots before taking the fam through the album upon your return.

Log out of social media

On the subject of images, take some time to log out of your social media accounts, at least for a couple of days. Sure, post a selfie or status every now and then, but who wants to spend hours scrolling through Facebook when there are wineries to visit, beaches to laze upon and sundowners to sip. You can the hit the socials when you get home, never forgetting #takemeback, of course.

Enjoy a day of doing nothing

No excursions, no activities, no plans; a day of doing nothing is good for the soul. Wake up late and lounge in bed for an extra hour, tuck into an incredible brunch spread, or make a beeline for a daybed by the pool or beach. Work through a couple of chapters in your current read, stream an episode of a favourite TV show or curl up to watch a movie. Do as much, or as little, as you like.
