Vines, vines and vines: there are grape-dotted creepers no matter the direction you look at Brockenchack Vineyard Bed & Breakfast in the Barossa’s Eden Valley. This kind of stunning scenery is part of the deal when booking the two-bedroom homestead, which sits on the estate of a working winery. The beauty of Brockenchack isn’t limited to its backyard; this getaway is the definition of a modern winery retreat. It comes fitted out with all of the home comforts (even heated ensuite floors and a fridge stocked with local breakfast provisions) and there is an indoor spa pavilion that overlooks, unsurprisingly, a pretty cluster of vines. Next door to the homestead is the soon-to-be cellar door and guests can also take up the opportunity to have a home-cooked dinner with the estate’s owners, Trevor and Marilyn.
Jackalope, the design hotel on the Mornington Peninsula, made one heck of a splash when it opened in 2017. Lavished with praise for its style and service, the hotel’s setting saw this boutique bolthole skyrocket up the ranks of Australia’s upscale winery getaways. Hole up in a vineyard view room to look across one the hotel’s most famous angles: across the infinity pool and the vines beyond. This outlook can also be ‘ooh’ed and ‘aah’ed over from a seat in a poolside lounger, a scenario made complete upon the delivery of a glass of Rare Hare sparkling wine. Even if you’re not the type to loll about on the pool deck, make time to take in the pool-skimming view at golden hour or sunset just once. From there you can head into Doot Doot Doot for a degustation dinner, or venture off the hotel grounds towards one of the Mornington Peninsula’s other acclaimed diners.
Spicers Vineyards Estate, Hunter Valley NSW
In the world of New South Wales wine, the Hunter Valley is king. With its resort-like feel and vine-flanked setting, Spicers Vineyards Estate will prove irresistible to couples wanting an escape that is equal parts relaxation and indulgence. The suites and rooms are tastefully appointed, with soothing neutral hues and comfortable furnishings. Ask for a suite with a balcony or verandah to have use of an outdoor dining setting; some overlook the Estate’s private vineyard. The cellar doors of Tyrrells and Keith Tulloch wines are some of the estate’s closest neighbours, and guests can also arrange activities such as hot air ballooning, horse riding and helicopter tours. Or, you might simple choose to laze by the pool, book in for a treatment at Spa Anise or sit down to a lip-smacking meal at Restaurant Botanica.
Serengale Vineyard Retreat, High Country VIC
Serengale Vineyard Retreat is a winery getaway and a gourmet escape rolled into one. This is the perfect break for food and wine lovers, delivering a location that is sandwiched between two of Victoria’s epicurean hotspots – Beechworth and Milawa. The retreat also sits next door to the working Serengale Vineyard and guests are invited to enjoy a tasting of the estate’s range. There is also a bottle of Serengale wine waiting for you upon arrival. As for the retreat itself, this five-bedroom house hits all of the right notes for shiraz-sipping groups or even a family wanting their next trip to have an epicurean flavour. There is a fenced swimming pool and a good kitchen, as well as 14 acres of garden.
Altamira Retreat, McLaren Vale SA
McLaren Vale is a natural choice of a destination for a winery getaway and Altamira Retreat gives its guests a private perch in this grape-heavy region. Fruit grown on Altamira’s vines goes into vintages sold under other neighbouring winery labels, but the planted rows make for a picturesque outlook; one that can be admired from bedrooms, the living room or, best of all, a seat on the covered verandah. On your winery getaway at Altamira Retreat, revel in the peace and quiet of your setting. Pair your unwinding time with a glass of something local, some charcuterie or even a homemade pizza that has been pulled, piping hot and perfectly crisp, from the wood-fired oven outside.
Polperro Winery Villas, Mornington Peninsula VIC
Polperro Winery is one of the Mornington Peninsula’s most popular visitor got-tos, but to guests tucked away in one of the estate’s private villas, it may well feel like you are the only visitors to this acclaimed vineyard. This quartet of hideaways – three standard villas and one premium – sits in a quiet corner away from the bustling cellar door and bistro. Each villa is self-contained and perfect for couples, with a king bed, open fireplace, kitchenette and freestanding square spa bath. A private deck is shielded from the eyes of other villa guests and gives uninterrupted scenes of a vine-strewn block. Couples will be quick to learn that this is an unrivalled spot for morning coffees and afternoon sundowners. When you do want to sample Polperro’s bistro fare for yourself, ask for a table on the deck – it too has gorgeous vineyard views. Better yet, you might even arrange for a picnic basket that you can take down to the dam.
Tamar River Apartments, Tamar Valley TAS
The elevated stays at Tamar River Apartments have the perfect vantage point for admiring the surrounding vineyard views. Dotted along Tamar Ridge at Browns Tamar Ridge Vineyard, the one- or two-bedroom escapes are north facing so have prime position for afternoon sips on the balcony. If a chill in the air keeps you indoors, still get your fix of vine vistas by relaxing in the deep soaking bathtub. From your apartment’s front door, it is a leisurely five-minute walk to an award-winning cellar door, or you could bundle into a car to explore the other drinking dens sprinkled throughout the beautiful Tamar Valley.
