Your guests have booked your property for an upcoming luxury getaway. They have packed and are looking forward to escaping, be it a romantic weekend break or a week-long group holiday. A beautifully presented property isn’t the only ingredient needed for a memorable escape though. Some thoughtful extras go a long way in giving guests an experience they’ll brag about to their friends and family at their next dinner party. A collection of small touches and attention-to-detail will have travellers singing your praises and can often turn first-time visitors into return guests. Here, we’re sharing seven extras we know the Beautiful Accommodation audience appreciate.

The Warm Welcome

First impressions count. Think fresh flowers, a subtle scent diffuser and a personalised note welcoming the guests to your property. When guests arrive late at night or once it is already dark, a welcome light to guide them inside is a practical (and thoughtful) touch. Go one step further by having a fire lit or electric blankets turned on in winter, or running the air-conditioner an hour to two before the guests’ check in during summer. Arriving to a snug, toasty atmosphere or a pleasantly cool room is a great way for guests to start their getaway. You may even like to offer a warming or refreshing drink upon your guests’ arrival.

The Edible Extras

A welcoming gift placed in your guests’ accommodation goes a long way in showing visitors that you appreciate them choosing your property for their getaway. A good local bottle of wine is great for couples and adult groups, and popcorn, chips and a packet of lollies will go down well with families. Chocolates are a classic crowd-pleaser, no matter if it is a box from the supermarket, handmade morsels, or artisan truffles. These edible extras are also the perfect way to show off the area’s local producers and food and wine credentials.

Start The Morning Right

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Having a selection of breakfast fare on hand, whether it is used for a late brunch or an early wake-up call is a sure-fire hit with guests. A hamper stocked with produce guests may cook themselves – eggs, bacon rashers, tomatoes – is a gourmet treat. Or, if your getaway doesn’t have hot cooking facilities, consider substantial provisions that might include locally made preserves, muesli and a fresh loaf of bread. The cost to cover provisions may be built into your nightly rates. Extra supplies such as barbecue meats, beverages and snack items, could be provided at an additional charge, however some pantry basics; small bottles of oils, herbs and spices, some condiments, can be staples that are carried over between guests.

Help your guests get to know your property with a compendium. This is a guest’s how-to guide to your property. You can include directions for TVs or appliances; instructions for lighting a gas fireplace or barbecue, plus WiFi passwords and any emergency phone numbers. Having this information on hand will mean your guests can easily make use of your property’s facilities.

Help Pad Out Their Itinerary

Chances are your guests are looking to explore the local area during their getaway. Point them in the right direction by keeping a stash of guidebooks, restaurant tips and activity recommendations at your property. Brochures, papers and even takeaway menus could be kept in a beautifully bound compendium. As well as suggestions for the local area, also think about providing something for guests to do while they stay closer to home. A collection of books, games and DVDs will keep everyone entertained indoors. If you’re providing magazines, try to keep them current and up-to-date. Replace any that become too old or worn.

Stock Up Supplies

Have guests booked in for a longer stay in self-catering and self-contained accommodation? Making sure they have a stock of supplies – bin liners, paper towel, tissues – is essential to guaranteeing they have a smooth and enjoyable stay. Asking for extra rolls of toilet paper is probably low on the agenda for their getaway. This is especially true for properties that do not offer housekeeping services for long stays. Keep top ups in a linen cupboard or laundry space.

Check In… Before They Arrive

When your guests are only a few days out from checking in, think about giving them a quick call or email. This will allow you to confirm their arrival time as well as ask if they require anything extra that hadn’t previously been mentioned – highchairs, cots, parking permits. This gives you time to organise anything in advance (rather than on the day) and create a smooth check-in process for your guests.
