The hottest cellar door accommodation for your next weekend escape

We won’t deny the fact that we love our city headquarters; with its hidden bars and eclectic dining scene. But like all urban dwellers you don’t need to twist our arm to get us to wine country for some fresh air, idyllic scenery and, most importantly, free flowing cellar door samplings. We’ve located a delicious mix of vineyard accommodation just for you. Bottoms up.

Seppeltsfield Vineyard Cottage

In the midst of the Barossa Valley’s world-class wineries, screened away by the vines that produce Seize the Day wines, Seppeltsfield Cottage offers more than just a heady escape – it’s an unmatchable experience of the region. A heritage home circa 1860 lovingly restored, original features have been preserved but every modern luxury has been added. Open the big French doors leading from the bathroom to the rolling landscape, and then sink into the freestanding tub with a view. Your dedicated hosts don’t miss a beat, sharing their insider tips to make sure you have the best time possible. Take a private tour of the estate finished with a tasting, organise bikes to get about, and have dinner booked for you at one of the region’s many mouth-watering restaurants.

The Kirche at Charles Melton

Drive three-minutes from Tanunda and you’ll find another not-to-be-missed cellar door experience in the Barossa. ‘Kirche’ is German for church – as the name would suggest, this is a 19th century chapel converted into luxury accommodation, on the site of Charles Melton vineyard. Charles Melton produces top-notch reds; originally modelled on those of the Rhone wine region, they now have their own distinctive style. Inside the house, our first stop would be the kitchen, where you’ll find a bottle of wine, artisan cheeses and gourmet breakfast provisions. When you’re ready to emerge from this literal sanctuary, stroll to the cellar door for a few wine tasters.
Cellar door hours: Daily from 11am – 5pm

Max’s Retreat at Red Hill Estate

The Mornington Peninsula entices us both as a first-class wine region and incredible beachside destination. Max’s Retreat Cottage is tucked away in the original Red Hill Estate farmhouse, overlooking the vineyard to Western Port Bay and Phillip Island. When you arrive the first thing you’ll want to do is pop open the bottle of chilled sparkling on hand, and recline on the deck with views of the countryside stretching out to the coast. It’s a two-minute walk to Max’s Restaurant and the estate’s cellar door. Enjoy lazy mornings at your secluded cottage picking through the breakfast basket, and then head to the cellar door to determine your favourites before settling in for a wine-matched lunch at the award-winning restaurant.
Cellar door hours: Daily from 11am – 5pm

Hunter Valley Cooperage Bed and Breakfast

Nestled into Pokolbin wine country in the heart of Kelman Vineyards Estate lies Hunter Valley Cooperage B&B. Here there are three luxe rooms to choose from – the original stay with views of the vines and the lake, the Scandinavian-style studio apartment, and the newest addition and our recommendation the ‘Champagne Room’, with its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a picturesque orchard, huge double bath and oriental decor. Add all sorts of great extras such as port and chocolates in each room, shared amenities including a plush movie theatre, tennis courts and a private golf range, and you’ve got yourself one entertaining gourmet escape. A generous breakfast is served up each morning – the ricotta pancakes with honeycomb butter are a standout. And the cellar door is of course within easy reach, where you can sample the wines alongside olives and other deli treats.

Rupert’s Ridge Estate Vineyard and Retreat

At the southern end of the Heathcote wine region in Redesdale are two retreats connected to boutique vineyard Rupert’s Ridge Vineyard Estate. This accommodation was once historic farm sheds, transformed into the villas ‘Sunrise’ and ‘Sunset’, their hilltop perch meaning spectacular views over Mount Alexander and Redesdale. The owners’ dog Rupert is the vineyards namesake, and there is a ‘luxury dog retreat’ onsite for your pooch if you want to treat them to a weekend away. The huge verandah fronting each villa is the perfect spot to take in the unbroken vistas, or to stargaze from your private hot tub while enjoying a bottle of estate wine. Your hosts are former urbanites who turned to country life and never looked back – these retreats are their way of sharing the tranquillity and beauty they have found of this region.

The breakfast delivery here includes free-range eggs, fresh bread, bacon, espresso coffee and locally made spreads. There’s a wine for every palette at the cellar door, and if you’d like cleansing ales between samplings, the Whitfield Pub is just a short way up the road.
