A wild, sandy landscape teams with luxury accommodation on Fraser Island
Fraser Island is one of a kind. Truly. It’s the largest sand island in the world, and the only known location where rainforest grows on sand. Fraser Island’s World Heritage-listed cred has it sitting alongside landmarks including Uluru, Kakadu and the Great Barrier Reef. Add to that the fact that Fraser Island boasts half of the world's perched lakes - a lake formed when a sand dune depression permanently fills with rainwater. Given its protected status, the only mark you’ll leave behind on Fraser Island are your footprints. What you'll take with you however is a set of memories that will last much longer than the tan you build while you're here.
The coast is where Fraser Island shines, and the beaches beckon to every visitor. Some of Fraser Island’s most famous inhabitants are the dingoes, but other locals include birdlife, dugong, dolphins and migrating humpback whales. Wade into the water off a beach of your choosing, or take a tip in one of the perched lakes. Lake McKenzie's waters are a dazzling blue and Lake Wabby, near Hammerstone Sand Blow, seems to glow emerald when the sun hits it just right.
To stay dry head off on the Fraser Island Great Walk. The route takes walkers past Dilli Village and Happy Valley, as well as some of the island's most popular sites. From start to finish the walk comes in at 90 kilometres and tackling the entire thing can take almost a week (depending on your pace). Happily though, it's easy enough to divide the walk into manageable chunks so you can still see the island but be back at your luxury Fraser Island accommodation in time for sundowners.
A boom of 4WD traffic has hit Fraser Island in recent years, and if you’re planning on making tracks in your own vehicle by crossing over on the ferry from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay, your wheels will need to have height clearance.
Camping is a great way to stay on the island, or there are a number of self-contained villas and resorts for those seeking luxury Fraser Island accommodation. Check out our handpicked selection here, or browse other Sunshine Coast or Queensland accommodation.
