Luxury, Romantic and Boutique Accommodation on the Limestone Coast
The Limestone Coast offers broad surf beaches, award-winning wines and beautiful accommodation.
The breathtaking Limestone Coast stretches from the Victorian border up the coast to the lagoon ecosystems of Coorong National Park, south of Adelaide. Although little-known, this part of South Australia is starkly beautiful, packed with natural wonders, and small historic townships. Stay in authentic farmstays, luxury Limestone Coast accommodation, self-contained cottages or historic buildings and soak up the history of the area.
Millennia of geological formation have shaped the surrounding region, producing the soils that yield some of the world’s most sought-after red wines. Coonawarra’s famous cabernet sauvignons are a product of the region’s nutrient-rich ‘terra rossa’ soils, and are known throughout Australia for their deep, rich flavours. The same geological forces sculpted a landscape of deep caves and volcanic cones over time, including the world heritage-listed Naracoorte Caves, which date back 500,000 years.
Although smaller towns are dotted through the Limestone coast, the oldest established town in the area is the inland settlement of Penola. Founded in 1850, it can still boast many stunning historic buildings and is most famous for playing a central role in the life of Mary McKillop, Australia’s first canonised saint.
Fifty kilometres away, South Australia’s second biggest town Mount Gambier is the capital of the region. It’s famed for its volcanic geography and crater lakes, the most reknowned turns a bright cobalt blue in summer months. Its blue waters are at their most surreal in November but the lake is fascinating at any time, and so are the Engelbrecht limestone caves, which can be see from a viewing platform or more extensively via a cave diving system.
The road southeast of Mount Gambier leads to the dramatic coastline surrounding the popular summer holiday destination of Robe, with its creamy white beaches and glassy waters. The clean southern seas produce a huge bounty of fresh produce, and rock lobster is one of the most sought-after catches.
