Luxury, Romantic and Boutique Accommodation in Fremantle

Shipwrecks, seafood and fresh salty air.
Explore sun-kissed Fremantle, where the city collides with the beach

Fremantle, or Freo once you’re on more familiar terms, is an old port town where streets boast colonial buildings, galleries, restaurants and remnants of the area’s convict history. It's only a stone’s throw from Perth (about a 30-minute drive or 20-minute train trip), so is a place that works as a day-trip, a weekender destination or a longer stay.

First up, get to know Fremantle's history. The Round House Prison gets its name from its 12-sided shape and was the first permanent building in Western Australia. Another of Fremantle's top tourist attractions also has a criminal background: the Fremantle Prison. It was built by convicts in the 1850s and offers a variety of tours, including a torchlight tour for those not easily spooked. On the subject of Fremantle's penal past, the Convict Walking Trail is also worth a wander. It takes walkers past Pensioner’s Barracks and Essex Street.

Fremantle’s food and wine scene is stellar, and visitors should make the most of sun-kissed days by booking a table at one of the al fresco eateries lined up along the waterfront. Fishing Boat Harbour is the top pick for fresh seafood, and ocean delicacies can be washed down with a local brew or glass of wine. Cappuccino Strip is another foodie favourite with casual cafés and old seafaring pubs. If you have self-catering facilities at your accommodation, the weekend markets are a great place to pick up local produce.

With Freo's laidback attitude, the city is a paradise for creatives and artists. Explore the collection of local galleries or tee up your travel dates with one of the festivals and events. In the mood for a day excursion? Try Rottnest Island, home of the too-cute quokkas and only a short ferry ride away from Fremantle.
