It is hard to believe that at one point, the future of this 1876 heritage gem was in question. In a town famed for its heritage credentials, it was a stroke of good fortune that Rose Eden House fell into the hands of Ian and Therisa Cross and their son. With developers eyeing off the land, the Cross family saw the potential to bring this former headmaster's house back to its glory days.
The Rose Eden mansion now comprises four spacious apartments. The sensitive restoration retained all the heritage charm, but lavished Goolwa's prettiest rose with modern day luxury. Each apartment is decorated in individual tones, but each shares a similar layout, with a lounge (warmed by a gas fire), one king bedroom, an indulgent spa bathroom and a full kitchen for self-catering. Naturally comfort is key and there are thoughtful inclusions such as movies and books. The mature trees and rotunda add to the grand feel and there is even the surprise of a heated pool.
Today as visitors wander down Goolwa's main street, Rose Eden turns admiring heads and all cameras focus on her beauty. So you feel rather special as a guest when you step out the front gate to explore the galleries, cafes and shops knowing you are staying in one of the town's most significant legacies.
