If you’re an animal lover with a penchant for luxury, prepare for a treat: Jamala Wildlife Lodge is a unique, five-star retreat right in the heart of the National Zoo and Aquarium in Canberra. African-inspired suites spread across three accommodation ‘hubs’ allow you to spot rare and fascinating creatures while you relax in style.

Here, your room and your up-close encounter are bundled into one – and at Jamala ‘up close’ is no exaggeration. Imagine soaking in a freestanding bath with bears just beyond the glass. Or leaning back on a balcony with a flute of fine champagne, and locking eyes with a giraffe munching leaves from nearby trees. A clever design finds the suites woven in amongst the enclosures, with only a few windowpanes separating you from the animals. Dine alongside lions, lounge with sharks swimming past, and read a book in bed while Bengal tigers look on. These are once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and the photo-ops are unbelievable (really).

This exhilarating adventure includes a full itinerary for each day, so once you’re here, you needn’t worry about a thing. The hardest decision you’ll have to make: ‘which hub?’. Will it be a private enclosure where you can sleep amongst the trees and the extending necks of giraffes? Or the luxurious Jungle Bungalows that wind through the habitats of lions, tigers, cheetahs and brown bears? uShaka Lodge features seven stunning rooms, plus a pool, spa and lush gardens all accessed exclusively by its guests. At the Lodge you can choose cheetahs, hyenas, lemurs, sharks or sea-life as part of your stay’s special features. If you’ve ever wanted to rest like Aquaman does, the ‘Reef Room’ is your chance.

With the savannah-style surrounds and incredible fit outs – including deep soaking baths, four poster beds, minibars and plush lounges – a trip here won’t leave you wanting for anything. Zoo tours run morning and afternoon. And in between activities dining in the ‘Rainforest Cave’ is a highlight – it’s not often you’ll sit down to a lavish feast with the ‘King of the Beasts’ in full view. All meals are part of the deal, so you can forget cooking or gathering goods. Your days here are simply about enjoying your luxurious home away, exploring the grounds, coming face-to-face with the animals, and learning a little from each and every encounter. And the best part? Your stay means much-needed funding goes toward conservation efforts; this is a getaway you can feel good about.
