A secluded sanctuary fringed by verdant fronds in the Dandenong Ranges

Cottage in the Forest is exactly the kind of stay that springs to mind whenever someone mentions the idea of an off-the-grid retreat for two. The getaway sits on a one-acre property in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges, and though it is located not too far from a main thoroughfare, the cottage still delivers those peace-and-quiet vibes couples seek on a weekend away from the city.

The outside of the cottage makes it look as though it has jumped straight off the pages of a much-loved storybook. A forest-green weatherboard façade gives the impression that the cottage blends seamlessly with its lush surroundings, and the yellow glow of the lights providing a warm welcome to all guests.

Your first morning waking up at Cottage in the Forest is a blissful one. Blearily open your eyes, blink a couple of times and come almost face-to-face with a view of forest and ferns thanks to the mammoth floor-to-ceiling window panels that take up an entire bedroom wall. Contemplate rousing yourself from bed, or pull on an eye-mask and continue snoozing. Those that do tear themselves away from the soft linen-swathed bed can get to work making use of the generous breakfast provisions. Cook up the free-range eggs any way you like and leave a pot of freshly ground coffee to brew. Those that don’t want to think about self-catering can request a gourmet picnic hamper filled with treats from The Sassafras Providore.

To really up the ante of your romantic getaway, ring ahead to arrange in-cottage massage or spa treatments; a bottle of sparkling and strawberries on arrival; even a Yarra Valley winery tour.
