Country meets the coast at this heritage-listed stone cottage

Property reviewed by Lisa O'Brien on Tuesday, December 13, 2016

South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula might be known for its pristine beaches and rugged coastline, but it’s also home to the idyllic rural retreat of Brooklands Heritage B&B. Nestled on a 65-acre property dotted with manicured lawns and landscaped gardens, this heritage-listed stone cottage dates back to the 1840s and is now a romantic escape for two.

Choosing the country over the coast doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the beauty of the Peninsula beaches though – there are ocean views from every room. That includes the bedroom with its queen four-poster bed and French windows opening to the garden, and the ensuite bathroom with its candlelit two-person spa bath.

Owners Tony and Wendy Fawcus will ensure you’re well looked after from the moment you check in to the moment you leave, with thoughtful touches like fresh flowers, a complimentary bottle of wine from the cellar, chocolates, port and newspapers on request. If you’re visiting in winter, they’ll also provide firewood and marshmallows for a cosy night curled up in front of the wood-burning fire in the sitting room.

In summer, set yourself up on the wisteria-draped patio with an antipasto platter and bottle of local McLaren Vale wine to enjoy the spectacular rural and coastal views as the sun goes down. If your sundowner session somehow runs into dinner time, move to the front patio and fire up the Weber Q gas barbecue. Hint: this will also come in handy for cooking breakfast in the morning (you’ll find full provisions in the kitchen).
