An insiders guide to the Murray River region

Eat, drink, play and stay in Mildura with Tennille Chalmers from Chalmers Wines Australia

Back in the fold of the family business, and in her home town of Mildura after years travelling the world, you’re unlikely to catch Tennille Chalmers doing the same thing two days running. Whether she's donning boots in the vineyards, in cocktail dresses marketing the products she loves, or cooking up a storm with close friends, she’s a true ambassador for the Murray River region she lovingly calls home. We catch up with Tennille to get a local's guide on how we can best enjoy the spectacular Murray region.

What do you love about Mildura and the Murray Region? Why should we visit?

Most of all, the river. The majestic Murray creates the most unique and beautiful environment and of course if gives life to the region. The giant Red Gums on the river banks drape themselves over sand bars giving shade in the strong heat of the Mildura summer. There is a certain romance about it. The first thing I do when I have friends visit is to take them to the river, no matter what season. I show them the old Paddle steamers, take them for a swim at Apex Park in summer, or get a picnic together to enjoy on the lush lawns by the river near the rowing club. One of the best ways to experience the river is on one of the Luxury Houseboats. Adventure Houseboats have a stunning range of boat to choose from, all with spa's on the top deck and everything you need.

Eat
Do I have to choose just one? Stefano's handmade pasta at the Mildura Brewery is always worth the journey from wherever you are. Their beers are fantastic as well, the pilsner especially. The Yabby Sliders at the new Black Stump Bistro are to die for.

Drink
You can't beat going for an Aperol Spritz under the vines outside The Spanish Bar and Grill at the Grand Hotel on a warm night. Our 2013 Chalmers Rosato is perfect with friends for a Summer BBQ.

Play
A short drive over the river into New South Wales takes you to Trentham Estate Winery. The vista is like no other. Perched up high on Trentham Cliffs, the restaurant and cellar door spill out onto the vast lawns overlooking the river where Paddle steamers and houseboats can moor for the day whilst visitors enjoy the local wines, food and grounds.

Stay
For visitors to the Murray River region a stay at Indulge Apartments is a must. This fab pad sets the bar for luxury accommodation in Mildura, plus it's a haven for foodies right on the banks of the mighty Murray, where you can watch the houseboats drift by.

Meet The Art Vault on Deakin Avenue always has an amazing collection of works by local artists. We are so fortunate to have a lively arts scene in Mildura with many festivals across the year bringing world class talent to our doorstep.
