Yorke Peninsula, Flinders Ranges and the Outback Map

Luxury, Romantic and Boutique Accommodation in Flinders Ranges, Yorke Peninsula and the Outback

The very shape of the Yorke Peninsula hints at the myriad experiences it offers: ocean on two sides bisected by fields of gently swaying grain. Every road ends at a superb coastline dotted with walks, beaches and fabulous fishing spots. The local Aboriginal Narungga people have known the region’s riches for thousands of years but Europeans first arrived here seeking copper in 1859. Only now are travellers beginning to treasure its real experiential gold.

Flinder Ranges, Yorke Peninsula & the outback has it all, including luxury accommodation

Some of the best shellfish and table fish in the world are caught here from boat, jetty or shore, including blue swimmer crabs, southern salmon and the southern rock lobster.

Catch your own or seek out one of the many casual eateries where seafood is served. The miles of rugged coastline offer other bonuses: superb surfing, diving and snorkelling are never far away. But if you like land-based activities, there are art galleries and bushwalks all over the region. It all makes the Yorke Peninsula a tranquil yet spectacular landscape for holidaymakers seeking a full range of diversions with equally tranquil accommodation to match.

An inland contrast is provided by the southern Flinders Ranges, with its extraordinary landscapes and places to view its exotic wildlife. Mount Remarkable lives up to its name – its Hidden Gorge is splendid – and the region is dotted with historic towns such as Booleroo Centre, Melrose and Orroroo. Each has traditional country pubs and outdoor activities including riding the Pichi Richi Railway at Quorn.

The gateway to the central Flinders Ranges is through Hawker, where you should make time to see the nearby Yourambulla Caves. As you venture on from Hawker, the Flinders Ranges unfolds magnificent desert landscapes along the road leading to Wilpena Pound. Perhaps the best view of the Pound is from the rim, where the craggy ramparts of this volcanic reserve catch the changing light of day to great effect.

Further north is Coober Pedy, the outback opal-mining town that provides one of Australia’s most inimitable tourism experiences. You can stay in an underground apartment, shop for opals from reputable galleries and even dine in a cave. Above ground, explore the mining operations and take the time to talk with the locals – they’ll have tall stories of the latest opal seams and big strikes to share with you. From Coober Pedy, you are on your way to Alice Springs, through some of Australia’s most awe-inspiring scenery.

Whichever route you take, this huge area of South Australia will leave an effect – whether it be the extraordinary landscapes or the colourful characters that you will meet along the way, say, propping up the bar in some small outback town.

Discover our handpicked Yorke Peninsula and Flinders Ranges accommodation and ensure a truly memorable escape. We also have a collection of accommodation across South Australia for those continuing their exploration further afield.
