Harvest Home at Avenel must come close to being the most complete country food, wine, and bed and breakfast experience possible. In one package you have a colonial-style corner hotel converted into accommodation, a variety of dining options from a casual cafe to poolside alfresco or the Victorian grandeur of a degustation menu in the dining room. And there is a vast wine cellar to complement the food.
It's all just a short hop along the Hume freeway from Melbourne. Owner Suzi McKay's passion for good food, much of it organically grown in Harvest Home's own gardens, shines through in the cuisine on offer – not to mention the awards won. She specialises in sourcing great meat and cooking it to bring out the flavours, so do book an accommodation and dinner package for the experience.
Choose from one of the hotel's rooms and enjoy a spa ensuite, or there are self-contained cottages for even more privacy. Events are often held in the gardens, such as a twice-monthly organic produce market, and the area is renowned for its focus on slow food, wine and outdoor activities.
Harvest Home also makes a great base for wine exploring and tasting - it's only 45 minutes to the middle of the Yarra Valley wineries, and 10 minutes from the Nagambie Lakes and Strathbogie wine regions.
