Storm-ridden seafarers used to find shelter from the fury of the Southern Ocean in this sandstone-flanked cove, but Port Campbell is more notable as a haven of hospitality from the Great Ocean Road's tide of tourists and holidaymakers. And just around the corner from the beach, Waves sets the standard here as a designer-chic cafe/restaurant with a nautical look. It faces the main street and has a separate block of spacious suites behind, where guests may stay in pampered comfort.
The spacious upstairs and downstairs open-plan suites are fitted out like superior hotel rooms; all have private balconies or open on to a garden terrace. Five have huge spa baths from which, if you wish, you can watch the television across the room. As former farmers, hosts Elizabeth and Bill Kordupel appreciate the importance of serving food that's generous in quantity as well as impressive in quality (fresh seafood is a specialty).
Waves is an ideal base from which to explore the renowned Shipwreck Coast that includes such outstanding features as the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge.
Location: 286km or 4½ hours southwest of Melbourne via the Great Ocean Road; 240km or 3½ hours via Colac. Melway 926 F9. HEMA RA 45 J8.
Facilities: Seven suites (private balconies or terraces, five with king beds and spa, two with queen beds; RC AC, TV, DVD). Licensed cafe/restaurant open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Visit this property's website
