Of all the historic churches, banks and post offices born again as beautiful B&Bs, this is one of the finest conversions we have seen. The first overland mail run between Melbourne and Sydney came through the little Murray border village of Howlong, which had to wait until 1897 for its own purpose-built post office and postmaster's residence – as such it served till 2005.
Enter Robyn Cotter, who has done a marvellous job in transforming the heritage-listed building into guest accommodation of style and elegance. The Bourke suite, named for the first postman, is in the old postal chamber. The McKay suite occupies the parlour of the original postmaster's home and honours his name. Both have private sitting rooms with open fires and marble bathrooms with spa baths.
There is also a guest lounge, kitchen and sunny conservatory for breakfast with the morning papers. Depending on the package selected, complimentary extras may include sparkling wine, antipasti platters and a fully cooked gourmet breakfast.
Location: 300km or 3¼ hours northeast of Melbourne; seven hours southwest of Sydney. Melway 922 E5. HEMA RA 49 A8.
Facilities: Two suites (king bed, marble spa ensuite, private sitting room with gas open fire, TV, CD, DVD, heating, cooling). Guest lounge (Austar TV, DVD, CD), kitchen for guest use, conservatory. Off-street parking. Gourmet breakfast served. Visit this property's website
