It's a surprise to find so grand a mansion in such a glorious garden setting – removed from, yet close to Rutherglen and Albury-Wodonga. A monument to family wealth based on alluvial gold found at Yackandandah in the 1850s, Koendidda now combines historic charm with totally relaxing hospitality.
A stately carriageway leads around an old Tibetan cedar to the two-storey building of mellowed hand-made bricks, locally milled timbers and cast-iron verandah. Inside, up an impressive stairway, are five beautifully furnished ensuite bedrooms, one with its own private sitting room. Downstairs, are two lovely sitting rooms, and there are plenty of private spots outside – on the verandah, balcony and garden gazebo – to sit for a drink or quiet read. It's a delight to wander through the four hectares of parkland gardens, with a background of majestic river gums along the meandering Indigo Creek and its languid lagoons.
 Add dinner in the formal dining room and the result is gracious country-house hospitality – on a grand and exclusive Koendidda scale.
