What do you do with a picturesque pair of historic kilns that are no longer needed to dry locally grown tobacco leaf' Simple: incorporate them into an architecturally designed house for visitors to this alpine valley at the foot of Mount Buffalo. The Kilns is a brilliant concept beautifully executed. It is situated on what is now the Alpine Ankus stud farm next to a vineyard, which reflects the changing land use in the Ovens Valley since the progressive stubbing out of tobacco growing.
The original kilns have been ingeniously made into two living areas, one for relaxation by a log fire, the other for informal recreation. Each have a TV, so two groups can amuse themselves separately. Behind the kilns are three bedrooms, two bathrooms (one with spa) and a kitchen with a dining area. Modern furniture, polished concrete floors with built-in heating, air-conditioning and WiFi ensure a memorable stay with great mountain and valley views from every room.
With an unusual history brought up to date with architectural flair, The Kilns is one of our exciting finds for this edition. Location: 300km or 3¼ hours northeast of Melbourne. Melway 922 F9. HEMA RA 49 E9.
Facilities: One house: three bedrooms (two king, one with two sets of king single bunks), two bathrooms (one with spa), two living areas (each with TV, DVD), log fire, kitchen/dining, laundry facilities, wireless internet, RC AC, deck. Self-catering.
