Banks were built like this, with solid walls and arched windows, when rural economies were enriched by gold and grazing in the 1860s. And bank managers were men of importance in country towns, living in fine style above their banking chambers. Tavistock House, a former bank on a prominent corner in the middle of Mansfield, recalls something of those days in its accommodation for visitors to the High Country.
Tavistock's three high-ceilinged guest rooms and its fireside lounge have been restored and refurbished with heritage decor and upper-crust colonial-era furniture to reflect the status of its erstwhile occupants. Of course, there have been changes in deference to present-day expectations – the former bank managers would blush at the ensuite bathrooms with their double spas.
If you prefer an authentic farm experience, Tavistock's owner also has a self-contained cottage for up to 10 visitors on his 117-acre property near Mansfield. The kids will love it and your horse or pony is welcome too. Whichever accommodation you choose, they offer great value, especially during the ski season. Location: 190km or 2.5 hours northeast of Melbourne. Melway 922 B11. HEMA RA 48 F6.
Facilities: Three in-house, upstairs ensuite rooms (queen bed, double spa), guest lounge (cable TV, VCR, CD and log fire); self-catering. One self-contained farm cottage (sleeps 10); self-catering; stabling facilities. Visit this property's website
