Vineyards of predominantly Italian varietal grapes have supplanted the former fields of tobacco on the slopes of the picturesque King Valley and it is fitting that Casa Luna should reflect an Italian connection. But, inspired by the Australian environmentalist architect Glen Murcutt, it is not a replica of a quaint Tuscan villa but a new stunningly-designed, custom built, energy-efficient, L-shaped building with curved iron roofing in a serene rural setting.
A covered flagstone cloister separates the two guest suites from the main house. Both are tastefully furnished to a colour scheme of chocolate and cream; glass walls and French windows make the most of the views, including the developing garden perfumed by lavender.
A highlight of any stay will be Gwenda Canty's wonderful Italian-inspired cooking based on the best of the area's bountiful produce, along with her husband David Byles's selection of fine, cool climate wines of the King and neighbouring valleys. And once you have a taste, you will want to explore the nearby Milawa gourmet region – think wine, cheese, bakery, berries, mustard and more. Location: 270km or three hours northeast of Melbourne.
