Not much remains of Black Springs, a settlement established near Beechworth back in the 1860s. What is left, though, is utterly divine: the Black Springs Bakery Barn could be a small Provencal bastide or a gem-sized Tuscan villa or even a Yorkshire Dales farmhouse. Built from solid chunks of Beechworth granite, the 1877 barn has been fully refurbished in French provincial style and makes a gorgeous, romantic retreat for one couple in an idyllically rustic setting.
The barn is the creation of Fran Coburn and Anthony Flahive, who have worked sympathetically with the ancient building to instil modern comfort in an unobtrusive fashion. The garden is flamboyant – pure French formal, with some amazing ancient trees. Inside there are calming hues, Belgian linen lounge suites and a pot-bellied stove.
The kitchen has modern appliances blending perfectly with the stone bench tops and ceramic sink. The small courtyard is the place to enjoy local delicacies and wine brought back from a day's foraging. The bedroom looks towards Mount Buffalo, and has luxurious bed linens, soft pillows and French body products in the bathroom. It can all be summarised in one word: exquisite. Location: 270km or three hours northeast of Melbourne. Melway 922 E7. HEMA RA 49 C8.
