Beechworth is one of Victoria's most historic towns and Beeches on High is definitely part of that heritage – it is said to have been visited by Aaron Sherritt, an associate of bushranger Ned Kelly. Built in 1870, this lovely house has been meticulously restored by John and Lisa Furlong and is available for couples, friends and families to enjoy.
The house carefully combines 19th century features and antique furniture with modern convenience. The entry level has a formal lounge and three bedrooms with warm Victorian colours, even warmer open fires and comfy beds. Beeches' very charming features include its spa bathroom, second living area and kitchen ensconced in granite walls at basement level. Check out the intriguing display of seven original wallpapers discovered during renovations.
The period-style kitchen is well equipped, but guests will be tempted by Beechworth's many restaurants, just 100 metres away. Back at Beeches, a shade house and barbeque occupy the tranquil landscaped surrounds that lead down to babbling Spring Creek (pack some flies and try hooking a few trout).
Location: 270km or three hours northeast of Melbourne. Melway 922 E7. HEMA RA 49 C8.
Facilities: One house. Entry level: formal lounge, three bedrooms (one queen; one with queen and single; one with double and single; two with open fires). Lower level: kitchen, dining, lounge, spa bathroom, laundry. BBQ. Self-catering. Visit this property's website
